2015 Billiy Cart Derby

The Bangalow Billy Derby is on again Sunday 17th May 2015

Bangalow Billycart Primary Schools Challenge

It’s official, once again we have secured fabulous support from our regular sponsors, financial and promotional.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  You are all a major part of our event and your support is really appreciated.

This Sunday it will be four weeks (28 sleeps) before Billycarts once again thunder down the main street of Bangalow on May 17th.  What a great day we have planned.

But first things first!  The Primary Schools Challenge.  We have $1,000 prize money up for grabs and we’re spreading it around this year.  We’ve separated the billycart categories in 2015 and Schools can enter a billycart in the traditional and/or the homegrown category and they can have a driver and a passenger in either category.  Primary schools should register their interest in racing with Lyle on 0418 432 947.

Billycarts need to have good brakes, safe steering and weigh less than 75kgs.  For additional specifications and racing rules please download PDF

Competitors of all ages will race down the main street of Bangalow on Sunday 17 May 2015 for the annual Billy Cart Derby

Event Organiser Carolyn Adams has been involved for several years and believes that that popularity of the Derby can be attributed to it’s inclusive nature.

The Billy Cart Derby is a wonderful example of a community event because there are no barriers to entry.  It showcases good old fashioned fun regardless of age or social status.  Everyone can take part whether as individuals, families, workplaces or schools.  This year we expect many entries, showing the strength of the Derby as it embraces an even wider reach in our thriving community.

There are races for everyone – boys and girls from five years of age, through to “opens” and celebrities.  Don Page MP is a regular participant in the celebrity race and the oldest participant is claimed to be “Bangalow Bill” at 85 years of age.  Cart categories range from traditional, home-grown, professional and novelty which once featured the amazing Titanic Billy Cart, complete with the Iceberg.

In 2015 it is hoped there will be more innovative designs with the only conditions being weight which must be under 75kgs, good steering and brakes are essential.  Safety is paramount and thanks to local sponsors CRT Eden Country Stores, over 600 bales of hay are brought in to line the main street for safety reasons.

The main focus of the day is not the speed of the entries, but family fun for participants and spectators.  The Grand Parade is a highlight, taking place at 12.30pm featuring local bands, vintage cars, schools, local clubs, scouts and celebrities.

Racing will start at 9am, so get your cart ready, with all participants marshalled from 7am.  Full rules, cart classification, and race schedule can be found on the website -  www.bangalowbillycart.com.au  and registrations are  on the day from 7am in the Bangalow Hotel.
